Yesterday I found out that my dad was selected to purchase post season tickets for the Cardinals. I think he called to rub it in my face because I got the “Thank You For Registering For The Postseason Ticket Opportunity?” email…boo! Anyway- My mom emailed out today and they were able to get 4 tickets to Game One of the NLCS. Yayyyyy!!! I’m so excited for my dad. He is the biggest Cardinals Fan I know :) Not like an obsessed, crazy, my life revolves around the Cardinals type of fan, but rather a I can talk Cardinals Baseball with anyone, anywhere at anytime type of fan. He knows TONS of little tid bits and details about the team and all the players. He doesn’t really use the internet that much except to check on the Cardinals (and also basketball and football scores) and read the STL today website. Even if he can’t actually watch a game, he tries to listen to it on the radio or he watches the highlights when he get’s a chance. He doesn’t make it his priority, but if the TV is open or he has access to the radio he puts on the Cardinals. Coming from a family of 7 daughters and only one son…he never really got control over the TV very much. But luckily he raised some kids that are pretty big Cardinals fans and welcomed in some son-in-laws who are big Cardinals fans as well. These days the guys tend to take over the TV so he get’s to watch more of his games :) Anyway- I just wanted to share our fun news and how excited I am for my dad.

Willie McGee – such an unpretentious winner.
A rarity in sports & life these days.
I also love the hotdogs at a Cardinals Game!
Chrissie Neely says
Lissy! I have been waiting for this!!!
My favorite thing(s) about the Cardinals are the memories and being with my family! My first Cardinals game was when I was around 2 years old. Back then as long as I had something to eat (hotdogs, ice cream, popcorn, cotton candy) I was happy. Now you have to pry me out of my seat to visit the concession stand! I’ve witnessed McGwire’s 70th, walk-off homer’s, one-hitters, the I-70 series, and the retiring of “The Wizard’s” number!
But despite all of that, the single most memorable moment for me came when I was around 10 or 11. I was standing in the infield box seats trying to get autographs with my big brother and I remember the song “Real World” by Matchbox Twenty was playing. I couldn’t have been any happier than at that moment! No matter how busy my family gets we always make time to go to at least one game together each summer. The Cardinals have a way of bringing people together. Whether it’s a busy family like mine or a complete stranger, as soon as you figure out you’re both Cardinals fans you have something to talk about for hours on end! Oh, and I completely agree with your mom! Willie McGee ROCKS!
Mary Jo Schwend says
Okay, here it goes! Mike and I were at the Cardinal’s game when Ozzie Smith was told he couldn’t do his flips because he might get injured. So… he had his very young son come out when they announced his name and he did a sommersault! The growd Loved It!!!
Allison says
I don’t think I can beat Chrissie, but some of my favorite memories are seeing Jack Clark hit a grand slam (the only one I’ve seen in person) and taking the kids to their first games (this includes Andrew :) ). I just wish we could have gone to a game this year because Jackson really loves the Cardinals now. He can blame it on Lincoln
Erin Tallman says
Lissy-
Great to see you at Red Barn! I check you blog all the time b/c I love your pictures! I definitely put the letter pictures at the top of my Christmas list!
Back to the giveaway question- I love the tradtion of Cardinals baseball. I love that I can sit down with my husband’s grandpa, and always talk about the Cards. I love that when Trenton &I went to our first game together this summer, it was the most fun we’ve had in a long time. I loved the little girl in the ball cap a couple rows up who kept leading the cheers. I love that I have great memories of my dad watching the Cards on TV and making us listen to it on the radio!

Here is a couple comments that were made, but don’t show up on the main post because the comments were made on the picture rather than the blog post. It took me FOREVER to figure out why these comments weren’t showing up on my main screen. But I got figured out and you girls will now be part of the giveaway!!! Yayyyy :)
Comment made by Niki Wieman:
What is there not to like? I love the smell of the hotdogs and popcorn, the cold beer, seeing red everywhere, and the best of all…how for a few hours, everyone comes together for the same cause…cheering the cards to victory!
Comment made by Allison Tonsing:
I like the Cardinals because they are extremely philanthropic!! Also the people that work there are fantastic – I called my contact the other day and got an Albert Pujols signed baseball and an entire basket full of fun memorabilia for a fundraiser that I’m holding on Oct. 11th. We are in desperate need of bowlers therefore I’m plugging my event on your blog Lissy :) Check out http://www.komenstlouis.org and click on “Spare Nothing for the Cure” and bowl to end breast cancer forever! My other memory of the Cards is when you, me, Heather and Matt all drove to a game like 6 years ago and the traffic on hwy 40 was terrible. I believe we drank the entire way to the game (not the driver!!) just everyone else. Fun times!
missprissiness says
I believe I was scared to death that I was going to get arrested!!!
Mom, it was NOT my choice to drink in the car…I was the one driving :) But Allison you are correct, the whole evening was a blast!
P.S.- This is Lissy commenting :)

My favorite memories are from long ago when Tim McCarver was my favorite player because he was left-handed like me and going to the games with my dad (and mom) and sitting in the Red Bird Roost – I once got to meet old Mr. Busch who was also sitting in the Roost. In conversations, his friends always referred to him as “Auggie” or “Gussie” but my dad always called him “Mr. Busch” – I asked him why and he said he respected him too much to call him anything else! Very cool, Dad.
I loved Bob Gibson and watching Lou Brock steal bases – so much fun! I remember being at one of the games of the World Series in 1964 and how cool that was because we won that year. I love that my mom is a huge fan and can talk Cardinal baseball with the best of ’em.
I love being a Cardinal fan because we are the best fans ever!
Nancy Goodwin says
I have many fond memories, but the best is going to the World Series game in 85 (the I-70 world series) with my sisters and mom. The women got to go since my dad and brother were there in 82 when the Cardinals won the world series. I may have been only been 12 but it certainly made a lasting impression.
Donna Hudson says
OK, I’ll stretch the rules a little and nominate my sister, Barb Abernethy. Barb is part of the Cardinal memory Nancy just shared, plus gets extra points because she’s stayed a Cardinal fan even though she now lives in Kansas City! Barb had another great Cardinal memory yesterday. Barb’s daughter Ashley has been diagnosed with cancer, and they’re in Houston seeing doctors at MD Anderson Cancer Center. It just so happens that the Cards are playing in Houston, and they were able to go to the game last night! Even though the Cards lost, for a few hours they were able to go to the ball game and relax. I’m sure Barb had a beer and maybe a hotdog, and in the midst of everything else that’s going on, she and Ashley were able to enjoy the best team in baseball. It’s always fun watching the Cards at away game – we went to watch the Cards play the Braves in Atlanta and loved that you saw as many Cardinal fans as Braves fans – gotta love that too!!!

Okay, this might sound crazy, but it’s been on my mind lately. One of the things that I love about Cardinal basesball is the example that some of these men set in our community and for our children. There are several Cardinal players who attend our church and are there on the weekends worshipping with their wives and children, just like everyone else. There is no pretense and no special treatment is requested, they just are there and then they leave and the next time I see them they are on the big screen pitching and catching. It’s pretty cool, especially for my boys to see. They are die-hard fans, and it makes me happy to know that there are deeper reasons for the admiration.

Willie McGee and Ozzie Smith! ALL TIME favorite ball players! I remember taking my ball glove to the game – it’s been such a long time since I’ve gone to a game! WOW – but I remember it was tons of fun and exciting to see everyone decked out in Red!!

My first cardinals game is probably the most memorable for me (I was probably 6 or 7 years old). I remember it was a double header against the Atlanta Braves and we sat behind home plate. My sister and dad were heading down to get a snack and at the last minute I ran off after them when I decided to go along. When I got back I found out a foul ball bounced in my seat and an older gentleman about 2-3 rows back was twirling the ball in his hands that probably would have knocked me out since my mom said she dodged it and my dad was not there to catch it. I remember I kept looking back at the old guy twirling the ball in his hands….glad that I wasn’t there to get hit with it but wishing it was mine!!

I hit submit before adding in my favorite thing about Cardinals baseball…. by far THE FANS!! Cardinals fans are the most dedicated fans in major league baseball!! I’m always in awe of how full the stadium is and think its so sad when the Cardinals are playing out of STL and notice that the home team’s stadium is barely half full. But think its SO COOL to see a noticeable amount of RED in the opposing team’s stadium!! :)
jill says
I had forgotten about that! Ha! I do remember it clearly now! Too funny!
Barb Abernethy says
ok…he needs to compete with Steve for “who knows the most about the Cardinals” Ashlely and I went to the Cardinals game last night here in Houston. Darn…they lost, but they were just trying to give them a little incentive….or maybe not. Minute Maid field was pretty cool, but I don’t like the dome. Baseball should be played outdoors.
Barb Abernethy says
oh, and to set the record straight with Donna, I had a hotdog and 2 beers! Bud Light of course. Only a St. Louis brew!
Amanda Heeren says
We love the Cardinals!!! If there is a bigger Cardinals fan than Matt, I would be shocked! Our favorite thing about the Cardinals is that we have enjoyed so many memories watching them with our families at the old Busch and the new Busch. Thanks, Lissy, for taking such beautiful pictures of our family!
Kathy says
Lissy, you are going to have a tough decision to make! Good luck…I know it will be the right one!

Lissy, I am so excited to see this in a picture series. It has been a crazy week and I am finally sitting down to relax and of course it is with your blog! What is REALLY weird is that nacy and I were just talking about the biggest fan today! I don’t think it was a by chance that the bridesmaids wore RED! My favorite memory is three maybe four fold…I remember Shirlene going on and on about Ozzie and how tickled she would get when he did his flips…one of the first vacations I ever went on was to St. Louis with Dad, Shannon, Janelle and Kelly we went to the zoo and the next day was a Cardinals game. Then there is the FIRST for each of my children. The awe in their eyes is a memory I will treasure forever. My most recent memory was this year in the midst of the changes in our family we were able to set aside one night and be a family enjoying the game. All Jude could talk about all the way there was the fireworks and we didn’t really get it until Albert hit a homerun and Jude yelled “There they are!” As if they shot them off for him.
Tanya says
OK, Now I want to talk about Red Barn! Lissy, you did an AMAZING job!!! What do you think about setting up a 30 min photo shot? I don’t know if it is possible, but you could set up a fall set and work out some deal with the pumpkin guy and you could take pictures right then and there! You could have a couple of sets. One to look like a pumpkin patch and the other with straw bales and mums… well you know what I mean. You could still have your booth and you could get someone to book your shoots and what not. Think about!
It was lots of fun and it was great seeing you and your family rally around you! By the way my K is right next to my picture of grandpa.
love ya!
