Hello there! Oh holy crap why didn’t anyone tell me it was Thursday?? I LEAVE FOR KIRKSVILLE ON MONDAY NIGHT and I have something like 14 Nameboards to make before I head back and (as of this afternoon) 14 sessions to edit. No worries…it will get done. My friend Andrea is coming back over tomorrow for a day of Nameboard making and I’m confident that we will get them all done that day. Andrea & I went to design school together and the biggest thing you learn in a design school…..is to do an insane amount of work in one day. You lock yourself in the studio with vending machine food, multiple sources of caffeine, your iPod, your cell phone, an exacto knife, glue, foam core & your computer. That’s the thing with us creative people (or at least me), I come up with my greatest ideas at the 11th hour, when I can barely keep my eyes open. Then we get so excited, drink an unhealthy amount of caffeine and stay up for 2 days straight…we would all get margaritas after our presentations, then go home and sleep for a solid 10 hours.
So point being…I’m seeing the light at the end of the tunnel and I think I will be able to actually get to enjoy some of the holiday season! I get a full week of it and I’m so excited.
I will have all my sessions (thus far) edited and I will have all the time in the world to annoy my mother. I haven’t even decided when I’m coming back to St. Louis. I plan on staying in Kirksville for New Years because it’s such an over rated and pressured holiday…and when I spend it in Kirksville it’s always the best. We have our annual New Years Eve dinner at Pear Tree and fireworks at midnight. No finding the perfect dress, no paying $100 dollars to go to some party, no pressure, no taking care of all your drunk friends because no one offered to be the responsible one and they just assume you’ll do it, no consoling your drunk friends who are upset because their New Years didn’t turn out the way they planned, etc. None of that! I believe New Years could be SO SO SO much fun, but people just make too big of a deal and ruin it. It’s gets annoying and old real quick! Besides….my parents throw the best parties :) Always so relaxed, go with the flow, drink if you want, don’t drink if you don’t want to, lots of kiddos (always my favorite), good food, good friends & fun stories.
Ok- I’m rambling.
So….the other day I mentioned suspicious mail. That mail has been the laughter and “awww that’s so sweet” moments in my crazy three weeks. I’m sure my neighbor was trying to figure out what the heck was going on the other night when I got home and found 7 letters. I was laughing and talking to myself the whole time I opened them :) You guys are just too nice to me! Here are some pictures of a few letters
this last one is where I got my first lead in my investigation….I know this handwriting from a mile away!!! I’ve seen those “Y’s” since I was little. As soon as I saw the handwriting I immediately shouted out, “Cheryl Solari you better tell me what’s going on!!!” That’s right Cheryl (my lovely Godmother), you better start talking little missy :)
Thus far I have received $32 dollars…I know, crazy! I’ve set it all aside and I’ve been trying to come up with something to do with it. It’s definitely not mine to spend so I’ve thought of a couple different things. I thought about just dropping it in the bucket for salvation army, I thought about just keeping it in my purse and giving it to someone I think would appreciate it, but then I would risk having a Sandra Bullock moment in Two Weeks Notice where she throws the change in the construction workers coffee, thinking it was homeless guy begging for change. I also thought about doing the whole angel tree thing.
None of that seems like enough, so here is what we are going to do.
This is going to be a blog giveaway!!!!
Do something. Do something for someone who deserves needs it. Christmas is coming very very quickly and there are a lot of people who don’t get to enjoy it. A lot of people who are alone. A lot of people who have nothing. A lot of people who need something. A lot of people who give so much and never receive. A lot of people who go overlooked. It’s like that scene in Home Alone where Macaulay Culkin walks by that house and through the window he can see the family laughing, visiting & eating dinner together on Christmas…and he is outside alone, lost & without his family. KILLS ME EVERYTIME!!!! I would have swept that boy off the sidewalk, gave him dinner, conversation, a gift and ride to wherever he needed to be.
You could do so many different things! It doesn’t matter how big or how small. Be creative & document your “act of kindness” somehow. video, picture, writing, blog comment, etc. Just document it and submit it to me by Monday, dec. 28th. Ohhhhhh I’m so interested to see what people come up with.
Here is what the winner gets. I will take the $32, make it an even $100 and put it on one of those Visa gift card thingys. I realize some might pitch a fit about me putting in $68, but oh well! It’s $68 that will hopefully cause so many smiles. Some of you might not think $100 gift card is worth it and those are the exact people I do NOT want to participate. Those people wont be creative. I want you to participate because you are a nice person…the $100 is just a bonus :)
SO excited to see what you all do!
Lator Gator!

Oh and I’m totally with you about the New Years Eve – too many people do make it into something so over rated. It should be a good time with friends and family!

You’ve inspired me. I think I’ll go to WalMart and just watch His children until I find someone that needs my help.
I really feel that WalMart is His testing ground ..” “What so ever you do to the least of these you do unto me”

Wow…I have a whole new respect for WalMart (that I swore I wouldn’t go back into again…but now maybe I might).
but…with that said, Kelsey’s 18th birthday is Sunday and we’re shopping and dining on the plaza, and I think I’ll try to find someone to drop a few bucks on. Wait…the plaza? Ok…we’ll stop by WalMart first. We’ll look for a sign from Ashley on who the lucky recipient is. Oh, this will be fun!

Oh my dearest friend, Mary Carol, you are truly His child. Thank you for being my friend and inspiration. I am so blessed to know you.

I have been trying my best to think of others this whole season. I have just done little things like donating a dollar every time someone asks at a store while I am holiday shopping to St. Jude Children’s Cancer Research Hospital, putting some change in the salvation army bell ringers bin or this year for my husband’s family we bought them each a gift card that they could go online and donate the money to a charity of their choice. I think if I were to win the $100 I would ask that it just be a check that I could make out to St. Jude and make a bigger contribution than a few dollars. I really think it is a wonderful place. They do not turn away any child for treatment if they cannot pay. It is completely free for them. Parents don’t have to worry about expenses while their children are battling cancer. I think once you are a parent you understand just how amazing a place like this is. They operate on donations alone and I heard one time how much money per day it costs to keep it up and running and it was CRAZY! I can’t remember the exact number now but over a million I think. Anyway, that is what I would use the money for and the charity and random donations are what I have done to pay it forward already this holiday season. You have a great heart Lissy and this is such a nice giveaway!

I’m with Kristen – I don’t have much to donate, so I just purchase some gifts from the St. Jude store, I figure that I am purchasing gifts for people I might as well have the money go to St. Jude. Everyone should check out their store, they have a lot of different items and I had a friend of mine show it to me one year, 100% of the proceeds go to St. Jude and you are buying gifts anyway and it feels good to know you are helping even if just a little!!

Random acts of kindness are my favorite!! One time in college I had just gotten out of class, where we had had a pop quiz, and was headed to work (i was late and starving) and pretty grumpy (I didnt do so hot on the quiz), so I went to McDonalds for a quick bite before I had to go to work. When I went to the window to pay, the cashier told me that the person in front of had paid for it. A total stranger bought my dinner. I thought it was the nicest thing ever and it made my week!!. Its random things like this that make the world a better place. Every now and again I try and do the same thing, and I hope it brightens someones day. You just never know who is behind you in line, could be someone who needs the extra few dollars, or someone who just need reminded of the kindness of others. Its always nice to the mindful of other during the holidays but it shouldnt stop there.

Lissy,
I agree with Kristen, St. Jude’s Hospital is near and dear to my heart. I do a great deal of my Christmas shopping online with them. At school we have a first grader this year who had a brain tumor that was removed from St. Jude’s and she goes back for regular check ups. This has brought to mind the expenses that families may have to get there and back. I would love for you to give this gift card to this family or any other family that may have a situation like this. ( I can give you the name of the family if I were to be picked.)
Lissy, You come from a VERY generous family that gives from the heart. I really think that you should give the money to St. Jude’s. Give in honor of your uncle and second cousins….Dennis, Caden and Jude. The saint of hopeless causes!!
Love ya!!
Tanya
